23RD TURN OFF (UK) - THE DREAMS OF MICHAELANGELO [ CD / 60s / Pop-sike ] * With beginnings going back to the 1950’s, this Liverpool group evolved through the Merseybeat era into being known as The Kirkbys. Mainstay was vocalist/guitarist Jimmy Campbell who also wrote most of the material. One song “She’ll Get No Lovin’ That Way” was covered by The Escorts, whilst The Kirkbys only had one single released “It’s a Crime” (included here). Following a spell backing the Merseys, Jimmy Campbell and group moved into the psych 60’s period with a name change to the 23rd Turn Off (Liverpool being the 23rd turn off from the M6). In turn, one release resulted, the astounding & classic “Michelangelo”, a beautifully crafted psychedelic ballad, scored with some Penny Lane-esque trumpet and tinged with Campbell’s innate sense of melancholia. Following the 23rd Turn Off, Campbell and Billy Kinsley went on to form Rockinghorse and record the highly rated self-titled album, recently reissued by Rev-Ola. This collection has the entire recordings of the Kirkbys and 23rd Turnoff, the released, the unreleased, the demos, in chronological order, packaged in rare and perfect period photos with notes from extensive interviews with group members. / |

ACTION (UK) - UPTIGHT AND OUTASIGHT [ CD / 60s / Freakbeat ] * And now this most mythical and well-loved of all the '60s mod groups gets the BBC sessions treatment courtesy of Circle Records. Action faves 'I'll Keep On Holding On', 'Baby You've Got It', 'Never Ever' and a jaw-dropping 'Shadows And Reflections' are here in all their authentic analog glory along with a selection of covers that never made the studio; 'Uptight', 'Mine Exclusively', 'Take Me In Your Arms', 'Going To A Go-Go' and, at the patchouli-scented end of the spectrum, a frantic romp through The Byrds' 'I See You' and John Coltrane's 'India' rendered in flute and percussion and rescued from being entirely instrumental by Reg King's vocal scats. Sadly, selections from only three of the eight BBC sessions cut by the band between April '66 and December '67 could be salvaged. The nature of the source material means that the sound quality veers from excellent to poor but the energy of the band's performances shines through on every cut. The 18-month transition from Tufnell Park mod boys to Golden Gate Park flower children is illustrated perfectly within these 12 tracks. Booklet features an excellent in-depth essay from Nigel Lees, photos and memorabilia. Second CD contains one of the reformed band's 1998 London live shows. / |

ACUFF/ROY (US) - ESSENTAIL ROY ACUFF [ CD / VAR / Country ] * THE ESSENTIAL ROY ACUFF is a powerhouse introduction that boils down the enormity of Acuff's achievement to 14 must-have tracks. "Great Speckled Bird," the 1936 single that brought Acuff popular recognition and became one of his signature tunes, leads off the set. Other classics, like his famous versions of "Wabash Cannonball" and "Tennessee Waltz" (which he was one of the first to record), are accounted for, as is his cover of Hank Williams's "I Saw the Light." Acuff's cohort and publishing partner Fred Rose wrote many of the tunes here, and Acuff's reading of the achingly beautiful "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" alone is worth the price of this excellent collection. / |

This album, along with it's follow-up "Beck-Ola", are regarded as musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years that followed, and was a virtual blueprint for Jimmy Page & Robert Plant when recording the first Zeppelin album. Collaborators on this album (and bonus tracks) include Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Nicky Hopkins, Aynsley Dunbar and Madeline Bell. In 1967 and 1968, Ice were a much–touted but slightly mysterious recording band, constantly on the radio (including the famous John Peel show with Jimi Hendrix and Traffic), but seldom seen on television and never live. ‘Walk On the Water’ was the controversial track (disguised as ‘Walk Under Water’ for Radio One purposes) that was intended to be their second single and was eventually sidelined in favour of ‘Ice Man’.
